Understanding the Hebrews 6 Foundations and Why They Still Matter

Many Christians wonder, "What is Hebrews 6:1-2 about?" The answer takes us into the heart of biblical discipleship. The Hebrews 6 foundations we see in this passage lay out what the Bible calls the elementary teachings about Christ. In the previous chapter, the writer referred to these principles as “milk for babes.” This doesn’t mean anyone lacking in these teachings is immature, but that they are necessary building blocks for growth into maturity. What is implied is that every new believer should have established these things in their hearts in order to continue to grow in a way of maturity.

What we find in Hebrews 6:1-2 are the foundations that every believer needs to build a strong and firm life. Without them, spiritual growth in this present age becomes shaky and uncertain.

What Are the Elementary Teachings About the Christ?

Why did the writer call these foundations the elementary teachings about The Christ?  What made them elementary? To put it in other words, he was referring to these foundational points as “the basic understanding about the Messiah”, or “the principal understanding about Messiah’s role”.  The early Jewish followers of Jesus would have recognized these teachings right away. For them, “the Christ” was clearly revealed through the lens of the Tanakh, or Hebrew Scriptures. They would have understood the Messiah to be:

Read this nextSuffering and the Glory to Come
  • The Crushing One from Genesis 3:15, who would defeat the serpent.
  • The Seed of Abraham who would bless the nations and inherit the land.
  • The Prophet like Moses who would reveal God’s will.
  • The Son of David who would rule as King on an everlasting throne.
  • The Messiah, the Anointed One, who would suffer and later reign in glory.

These expectations formed the elementary understanding of the Christ for Hebrew audiences. They were foundational truths that guided Israel’s prophetic hope and longing for redemption and the restoration of all things.

Understanding the Hebrew 6 foundations is critical for every disciple of Jesus. God is preparing a strong people who will endure the great shaking that is to come, described in Hebrews 12:26–27.

And His voice shook the earth then, but now He has promised, saying, “YET ONCE MORE I WILL SHAKE NOT ONLY THE EARTH, BUT ALSO THE HEAVEN.” This expression, “Yet once more,” denotes the removing of those things which can be shaken, as of created things, so that those things which cannot be shaken may remain.

Hebrews 12:26–27

There will come a day when everything that can be shaken will be shaken, so that what is unshakable may remain. Jesus used similar language when He spoke of storms and winds that beat against the house in Matthew 7:24–27. Only the house built on the rock stood firm. These six foundations are the rock we must build on.

Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and it fell--and great was its fall.

Matthew 7:26–27

In both cases, only what is grounded in obedience to God’s eternal word will endure.

Hebrews 6:1–2 Explained

Hebrews 6:1–2 says:

Therefore leaving the elementary teaching about the Christ, let us press on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, of instruction about baptisms and laying on of hands, and the resurrection of the dead and eternal judgment.

Hebrews 6:1–2

This is a call to maturity in light of the Day of the Lord. The writer is urging disciples to move forward, but only after laying a strong foundation. If these foundation elements are not laid firmly, it is essential that we intentionally lay them firmly in place in our lives in order that our pursuit of maturity may be found to b fruitful on that day. These pillars are not just beliefs to accept but a lifestyle to live out. Let’s examine each of these six foundations more closely.

Repentance from Dead Works

Repentance is not just remorse for wrongdoing. It is a total reorientation of one’s heart and life away from the ways of the present age and toward the ways of God. It’s turning our view and ultimate hope back to the creator; Yahweh, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Turning from sin (our selfish ways) and the kingdom of darkness. It is allegiance to the coming King and a daily cruciform lifestyle of surrender.

Faith Toward God

Faith is not wishful thinking. It is rooted in the confidence that God is faithful to fulfill what He has promised, and living our lives with trust in those covenant promises. This faith holds onto the hope of resurrection, the Kingdom to come, and God’s righteous judgment. A central promise is that God is a rewarder of those who seek Him. It fuels obedience in the present.

Baptisms

Baptisms are plural because they represent more than one stage of purification and empowerment:

  • Water baptism: a cleansing that unites us with Jesus' death and resurrection and prepares the bride to be received on that day.
  • Spirit baptism: receiving power to be a witness and a confirmation of God’s new covenant with the house of Israel and all who are grafted into it by faith (Romans 11).
  • Fire and suffering: trials that refine and prepare us for glory.

These baptisms are not just symbolic. They are prophetic acts tied to the restoration process.

Laying on of Hands

Through this act, disciples exercise God's divine authority. As ambassadors of Christ, we proclaim the coming Kingdom through signs and wonders—foretastes of the age to come. This act represents the transfer of blessing, authority, and responsibility. Disciples are commissioned, healed, and equipped to serve in the present age.

Resurrection of the Dead

This is not just about Jesus' resurrection. It is our hope as well. Anchoring your hope in a future inheritance of the body, which is the gift of eternal life for those who listen and obey the Son of God. Believers will be raised in glorified physical bodies to live in the restored Kingdom. This is the promise of our full redemption. We await it with longing and perseverance.

Eternal Judgment

All will be judged with justice and righteousness. This final judgment will reward the faithful and bring justice to the earth. It motivates holy living now. With all these things in play, we live out our lives in preparation to give account for all that we have done in this body, both good and bad. Christ promised to reward each man according to his deeds.

If you’ve ever asked, “What is Hebrews 6 foundations about?” It’s about establishing a firm foundation in our life that prepares you to endure through the brokenness of this present age and overcome in the days ahead. Each Hebrew 6 foundation prepares disciples for the return of King Jesus.

Why the Hebrew 6 Foundations Are Critical for Discipleship

There are at least two key reasons why these Hebrews 6 foundations are essential:

1. A time of testing is coming. Hebrews 12 speaks of a shaking that will test every structure. Jesus also warned of storms that would expose what kind of house we have built. If our spiritual foundation is not complete, we will not endure.

2. Many Christian traditions (denominations) focus on one or two pillars but neglect the rest.

  • Some avoid teaching true repentance, reducing faith to mere belief without transformation.
  • Others see water baptism as just an outward symbol, missing its spiritual power.
  • Some deny the ongoing work of the Holy Spirit, saying spiritual gifts ceased with the canonization of the bible.
  • Others misunderstand resurrection, thinking it only applied to Jesus and not to us.
  • Some teach there is no final judgment for believers, leading to casual living without holiness.

This partial teaching weakens the structure of a person’s faith. Without all six foundations, the house is unstable. God is restoring His Church to walk in the fullness of truth. Only when the Church embraces the full foundation can we be the mature Body prepared for Christ’s return.

Laying a Lasting Foundation

To lay a lasting foundation, we need the right heart posture. This means approaching God’s word with humility, reverence, and a willingness to be reshaped. These elementary teachings about the Christ were not meant to be dismissed as “childish” or “basic.” They are the very things God has ordained to prepare a people for His return.

A first-century Jewish mindset understood the story of God as unfolding through prophetic history. “The Christ” was not a personal savior, but the fulfillment of God’s promises made to Israel. Seeing these teachings through a first-century Jewish apocalyptic lens reveals they are a call to readiness for the Day of the Lord.

We are not just learning doctrine as head knowledge, but are being formed into a people who can inherit the Kingdom.

For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men, instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus, who gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds.

Titus 2:11-14
