gospel jewish-roots scripture

They shall be My people, and I will be their God; and I will give them one heart and one way, that they may fear Me always, for their own good and for the good of their children after them.

Jeremiah 32:38-39

What’s In The Name?

The phrase "One Way Gospel" asserts the exclusivity and the central message of Jesus Christ, as the sole path to salvation and the restoration of all creation. This article will examine how the entire biblical narrative, from Genesis to Revelation, centers on a one way, singular timeline, beginning with YHWH the King of the universe, the Jewish nation, Jesus as the Jewish Messiah, the bringing of Gentiles, and finalizes with a restoration of all things at the end of this age.

Genesis 3:15: The Protoevangelium

The concept of the name "One Way Gospel" is laid in Genesis 3:15, often referred to as the protoevangelium, or the first gospel. In this verse, God declares to the serpent, "And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel." (NIV). This prophetic announcement introduces the promise of a coming Redeemer who would defeat the serpent, symbolizing the ultimate triumph over sin and death. This promise is understood within the context of the Jewish nation, for the lineage through which this Redeemer would come is traced through the patriarchs of Israel beginning with the promise to Abraham.

The Seed of Abraham: The Commencement of the Promise

As the biblical narrative progresses, the promise of Genesis 3:15 is starts to take shape through God's covenant with Abraham, the father of the Jewish nation.

I will make you exceedingly fruitful, and I will make nations of you, and kings will come forth from you. I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your descendants after you.

Genesis 17:6

And I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.

Genesis 12:3

In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.

Genesis 22:18

These promises establish that God's blessing to the nations would come through Abraham's seed, emphasizing the Jewish roots of this promise. The Apostolic writings reveal that this "seed" is none other than Jesus Christ.

Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. He does not say, 'And to seeds,' as referring to many, but rather to one, 'And to your seed,' that is, Christ.

Galatians 3:16

Paul clarifies that Jesus is the promised seed of Abraham through whom the blessings of God will extend to all nations, emphasizing His role as the promised “He” from Genesis and the direct path to restoration.

The Davidic Covenant: The Continuation of the Promise

The promise of redemption continues through the Davidic Covenant, where God establishes that the Messiah will come from the lineage of David and reign from Zion.

When your days are complete and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your descendant after you, who will come forth from you, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.

2 Samuel 7:12-13

This covenant with David promises an eternal kingdom through his lineage, which is fulfilled in Jesus Christ.

For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; and the government will rest on His shoulders; and His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness from then on and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will accomplish this.

Isaiah 9:6-7

This prophecy speaks of a future ruler from David's line who will establish an everlasting kingdom.

Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch; and He will reign as king and act wisely and do justice and righteousness in the land. In His days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely; and this is His name by which He will be called, ‘The Lord our righteousness.’

Jeremiah 23:5-6

Jeremiah emphasizes the coming of a righteous king from David's line who will bring salvation and security to Israel.

He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David; and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end.

Luke 1:32-33

The angel Gabriel announces to Mary that her son, Jesus, will inherit David's throne and reign eternally.

Jesus: The Horn of David Reigning from Zion

Jesus is often referred to as the "Horn of David," signifying His powerful and victorious reign.

There I will cause the horn of David to spring forth; I have prepared a lamp for Mine anointed. His enemies I will clothe with shame, but upon himself his crown shall shine.

Psalm 132:17-18

This psalm prophesies the rise of a powerful ruler from David's line.

Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for He has visited us and accomplished redemption for His people, and has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of David His servant.

Luke 1:68-69

Zechariah, the father of John the Baptist, praises God for raising up Jesus as the powerful savior from David's lineage.

The Singular Path to Redemption

The Gospels consistently portray Jesus Christ as the exclusive means of salvation from the wrath and judgment to come at the end of the age, which will bring the restoration of all things. On this foundation of truth is where One Way Gospel rests.

Jesus said to him, 'I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.'

John 14:6

In this declaration, Jesus proclaims that He is the only path to YHWH, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. This aligns with the prophetic promise of Genesis 3:15 and the Abrahamic covenant, positioning Jesus as the singular means of restoring humanity's broken relationship with God.

And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.

Acts 4:12

Peter's proclamation focuses on the exclusivity of Jesus' salvific work, reinforcing One Way Gospel’s mission, to teach and proclaim redemption and restoration within the Jewish framework.

The Gospel of God

The name or phrase "One Way Gospel" ultimately represents the Gospel of God, the good news of Jesus Christ, who fulfills God's redemptive promise to the Jewish nation and to the grafted in Gentiles. This gospel is the culmination of the singular narrative that runs through Scripture, from Genesis to Revelation.

Paul, a bond-servant of Christ Jesus, called as an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, which He promised beforehand through His prophets in the holy Scriptures, concerning His Son, who was born of a descendant of David according to the flesh.

Romans 1:1-3

Paul begins his epistle to the Romans by identifying the gospel as God's promise fulfilled in Jesus, echoing the prophetic anticipation of the Prophetic books. The reference to Jesus as a descendant of David highlights His Messianic identity.

But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, and by His scourging we are healed. All of us like sheep have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; but the Lord has caused the iniquity of us all to fall on Him.

Isaiah 53:5-6

The book of Revelation concludes with the assurance that God's redemptive plan, centered on Jesus Christ, will culminate in the renewal of all creation. This ultimate restoration is the fulfillment of the “One Way Gospel” rooted in the promise to Abraham and fulfilled by the promised seed of the woman, the coming “He” of Genesis.

And He who sits on the throne said, 'Behold, I am making all things new.'

Revelation 21:5

In Closing

The name "One Way Gospel" is a profound theological statement rooted in the singular narrative of Scripture, which consistently points to Jesus Christ as the fulfillment of God's promise to humanity. From the protoevangelium of Genesis 3:15 to the Abrahamic and Davidic covenants and the Apostolic writings, the Bible testifies to one way of redemption and restoration through Jesus Christ. This gospel of God is not merely one path among many but the exclusive way by which all things will be made new. One Way Gospel calls all people to recognize and embrace Jesus as the sole source of salvation and the ultimate fulfillment of God's redemptive promise, deeply rooted in the history and faith of the Jewish people.
