The War Zone
Why does Satan hate mankind so? What is it that motivates him to seek to destroy every human being that has lived, is living, or that will ever live? I realize that there are a number of different answers that can be found in Scripture that address these questions. For example:
- Satan knows that God has already determined his eternal doom
- He is aware that, unlike he and the rest of angelic host, mankind was created in the image of God making each of us a part of God
- Since our adversary knows that he cannot attack God, he simply set His sights to do the next best thing, to destroy us, God’s children
Nevertheless, I still believe that Satan’s all consuming hatred for mankind is driven by something more. And I think Isaiah 14 gives us insight into the ultimate reason that Satan is so bent on our destruction. Satan became so enamored with himself until he no longer desired to worship Jehovah nor to lead others to worship God. Instead, he fell in love with worshiping himself and with an insatiable craving to cause all others to worship him as well. Thus began his rebellion to redirect God’s worship to himself. In Ezekiel chapter 28, that prophet gives us insight into the anointed cherub’s role of worship leader by describing the musical instruments embedded in his very being from his creation. Now, Isaiah adds to that same scenario. He calls this creature: “Lucifer, Son of the Morning”.
The word Lucifer is actually a Latin word. However, in the original Hebrew, the term for ‘Lucifer’ is ‘Helel’ or ‘The Shining One’. What is interesting here is that the word ‘Helel’ comes from the same Hebrew root word (‘halal’— a word which means ‘PRAISE’) that we get our word ‘Hallelujah’ from. So what does all this mean? It means that Isaiah is informing us that Lucifer’s very reason for existence was all about worship! He held the highest position in Heaven. He was a Worship Leader as well as Chief Worshiper! His purpose for being was to bring glory and praise to Jehovah, and to lead all others in the praise and worship of Jehovah as well! And trust me; he was very, very good at what he did. He was the most charismatic leader who ever existed. That was why he could sway a thrid of the angels to follow his insurrection against God. Because of their mutiny, God had Satan and all who allied themselves with him cast out of Heaven. Later, God made what we now call our universe (as well as our planet, Earth). It was created as a perfect place and upon it God planted a perfect Garden in which He placed 2 perfect people. Of course, it wasn’t long before Satan shows up there in the form of a serpent. Eventually turning on his charm and deceiving the woman, with Adam blindly following her, into sinning.
Little did they realize that what Satan wanted from them more than anything else was their worship! Little did they realize that rebellion to God’s instructions, equaled ‘SIN’ and sin equals worship of Satan. That’s why, every time we sin, the Devil wins! Don’t miss the point here; Satan doesn’t love anybody but himself. When he is through with you he will destroy you. He is obsessed with worship, not for the sake of worship, but because he doesn’t want God to have what is rightfully God’s, our worship. Why do you think that Satan is so intent on promoting idolatry and all other religions of the world except true Christianity? Why do you think that you can say the name of any other god in America in a public place, just as long as you do not mention the name of Jesus? It’s because Satan knows that to worship all other religions and/or any other idol is actually worship of him. Paul warns us of the same in 1 Cor. 10:19-20:
1 Corinthians 10:19-20
19 What say I then? that the idol is any thing, or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is any thing?
20 But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils.
We Are In The Image Of God
Satan’s murderous hatred for all mankind is because we can offer to God what he cannot (as well as the one thing that he most covets) our worship! He doesn’t care what he’s got to do to get it, but he is driven by an all consuming madness to have it. He feeds on worship and yet, at the same time, he also is obsessed with our utter ruin. When Heaven’s chief worship leader was defrocked, there is no passage of Scripture that informs us that God ever replaced him with any other angelic being. Instead, God made man—and we were created so that each of us might give to God our own ‘halal’—(our worship) hence God created every human being with the ability for us to replace Lucifer! In the end, we all have to make our own decision about whom or what we are going to worship. Yes, Satan hates us, but more than any other reason it is because we all have the potential to worship God. To do what Lucifer will never again be able to be or be able ‘to do: TO BE WORSHIPERS OF OUR LORD! (Isaiah 14:12-16)
